A Living Room Feature: Involving Color

Today I had the honor of having my living room featured on the blog Involving Color.  You can see the feature here.  On Jena's blog, she shares paint colors and room galleries from real homes as well as her own decorating and diy projects in her lovely home.  It is a great place to search for paint colors if you are planning a painting project or to find some inspiration.

Thanks for the feature, Jena!

Family Room Progress: Easy Pillow Covers Made From Cloth Napkins

We are continuing to plug along in our basement family room remodel.  The mantel needs one more coat of paint.  Jason wanted so badly to get it done before his spring break was over, but he caught a nasty cold virus instead.  I am so excited to share it with you though!  In the meantime, I made some pillows to help brighten the room up a little bit.  While shopping at World Market a couple of weeks ago, I spotted these napkins on clearance.  I had seen other people make pillow covers for throw pillows out of cloth napkins before so I thought I would give it a try.  Turns out, it was pretty easy and very inexpensive!

Each pillow required two napkins to make the covers.  The price for each napkin was $1.98, making each pillow a great deal.  I didn't need to buy any inserts because I was recovering some throw pillows I didn't care for anymore.

Here are the finished pillows.

While I was at it, I also made some covers for the living room.  These pretty yellow and brown napkins were a Pottery Barn clearance find awhile ago.  I love how throw pillows no longer have to be an expensive luxury now that I have something to sew with.  How thankful I am for that little machine!

Do you own a sewing machine?  What is your favorite thing to make with it?

Thank you so much for reading!

Updated Living Room Pictures

We've made quite a few changes to our living room in the past year.  The previous owners in our house painted the room a dark tan color that wasn't our style.  We also were not fans of the orange trim, which wasn't salvageable to us anyway since there were so many imperfections in it.

We painted, added crown moulding, and painted the trim and doors white.

This year we added some color into the room by adding curtains, pillows, and accessories.  When there aren't trains or Matchbox cars lying all over the floor, the room can look like this.

What a difference a year makes!

And, just so you know, I actually prefer the room when there are little boys playing...

Just a Little Gray Table

I don't know when I've ever been so thankful for a Monday.  We had my in-laws visit this weekend and it was so wonderful to have them here.  However, there were a few events during their stay which made the visit somewhat unpleasant.  By unpleasant I mean our van stalling in the middle of a road resulting in a bill of around two THOUSAND four hundred dollars.  Ohmygoodnesswhereisthemoneygoingtocomefrom!?!?  How can so much go wrong since our last check in August?  To top it off, we also had a visit to the ER for my sweet mom-in-law.  She is fine, thank the Lord!  A visit to the ER is never something you want your visitors to have to go through.  Needless to say, there will be NO unnecessary spending in our house for the next year or so.  With that, I give you my last project for the year.  Only kidding!  I hope...  I bought this table for three dollars at a rummage sale.  It was a little wobbly so I fixed it up with some glue.

After I primed it, I spray painted it the same gray color I used for my rural French chairs.  I apologize for the poor lighting in my garage as well as my poor picture taking skills.  Let us just say that the table was ugly and needed some loving.

Here it is!  This little gray table is just what this space needed.  I can easily move the table when we need a little more space in our living room but helps to make the chair more at home in this awkward space in our living room.

I love the detail of the table.

By the way, did anyone else know that Dusty Miller flowered?  I did not but I love it!  The gray and yellow are so pretty.  I even had that color combination in our wedding over six years ago.  My love affair with yellow may or may not also have something to do with the fact that I had a little yellow baby doll that I took to bed until I was married...

Oh little three dollar table, you make me happy.  Speaking of things that make me happy, I just love gray and yellow together.  I'm sort of sad that they are so popular right now.  I hope I'm not out of style when some other color combination is in vogue and the gray/yellow combo is out.  I'll be true to you forever, gray and yellow.  I always have and I always will!

What color combination do you love?  Or wish would become "stylish?"  Are you over the gray/yellow already?  (Don't tell me or I'll despise you forever... just kidding).

Blessings on your Tuesday!

Living Room Fall Decorations

Hello, all!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is thankful that tomorrow is Friday!  I would be looking forward to it a little bit more but I've got to take my two boys for back to back checkups tomorrow.  We'll see how it goes!  I'm expecting a few tears to be shed.  Oh boy!

Today I'm sharing with you what our living room currently looks like, all decked out for fall.  I had virtually no color in my living room for the past five months or so.  It was refreshing to me and I liked the blank canvas.  For so long our living room had the color red as the main color.  I liked it when we were first married but it was beginning to annoy me.  We moved our old furniture down to the basement family room when we refinished it and bought our couch and tables, installed the crown moulding, and painted.  I assumed all along that the colors in my room would change with the seasons, while the main colors of gray, white, black, and brown would stay the same.  I decided to incorporate yellows and oranges into the room since they are fall colors.  Yellow also happens to be one of my favorite colors!  We even had it in our wedding!  Here is what I've done so far.

The pumpkin was a Pottery Barn clearance item I bought last year after Thanksgiving.  I love it!

I filled my apothecary jars with some brown, orange, and yellow leaves.  The little pumpkin used to be orange until I bought it from Goodwill and spray painted it white.

There's that mouse again...  He hasn't appeared in the laundry room yet, thankfully!

I think one of my favorite decorations right now is that white pumpkin on the left.  It lights up at night and gives off a pretty glow in the room.  I found it at T.J. Maxx a couple of weeks ago for ten dollars.

The shadows it gives off on the walls are so fun!

This is the other side table next to the couch.

Our console table is home to a crow, hovering over some antlers.  Creepy, no?  He's a little difficult to see though, so I apologize.

His friend has taken residence in my wire basket under the coffee table.  The pumpkin is from Michaels and was spray painted white.

This pumpkin sits on the bookshelf.  I also bought it from Goodwill.  It was clear, but I spray painted it white.  Surprised?  No, me either.  I just didn't want to see the candy that was inside.  I'm picky like that.  Plus, "I'm Lizette.  I spray paint everything until I like it, just like every.other.blogger.on.earth."

Here is the other Pottery Barn pumpkin that I bought last year.  The garland is one that I made this year with some twine and leaves.

The yellow pillows are a new addition to the living room.  They are from Pottery Barn.  I haven't actually finished sewing the yellow pillow on the left.  I bought some napkins and have good intentions of making them into pillows.  I just need to buy a sewing machine...  If anyone has any tips on what kind to buy, I would most appreciate it!  I just want to make easy things, so I don't need anything fancy.  I don't plan on taking up quilting or anything.  :)

Can you even tell that the pillows aren't finished yet?

The yellow and white pillows were on clearance.  I love Pottery Barn clearance items!  I know that they're somewhat summery looking, but I'm a decorator on a budget.  Sometimes you just have to make things work.  I've been looking for some orange or bronze pillows to add to the room but I can't find anything that I like.  We'll see what happens as the season progresses.

Since I like to tweak things around the house until I like it, I added these little pumpkins to the apothecary jars.  I found them the other day at Michaels and adore them!  They're technically called "mini pods" but they look like baby pumpkins.

There you have it!  Our living room is officially ready for fall.  Have you decorated yet?  Or am I the only one who decorates for upcoming seasons long before I should?  I'm okay with it, really.  I'll share with you how I decorated our dining room soon.

Have a happy Friday, all!
I'll be sweating at the doctor with two sobbing, clinging little boys...  Any prayers would be appreciated!
